Outfit of the Day: Jason Kitty, French Kitty

While last weekend was a long one (three days with the Labor Day holiday), it was a pretty low key one.

Outfit of the Day (Saturday):

On Saturday I was out of the house earlier than usual to pick up some bagels for breakfast and then later in the day I went out shopping for jeans at Old Navy and Macy's. It's news to me that major retailers like these are now stocking high waisted jeans! I love that high waisted jeans are back! I hope they will never leave again. Anyhow, when I was picking out what to wear for the day I had it in my mind that this was going to be another modern take on an 80's does 50's look (see my last look here)... I mean heart printed top, chambray skirt?? Sounds pretty 80's influenced to me. But when I had everything on together I realized it didn't really look all that 80's inspired at all, maybe a little 60's school girl geek chic? Anyhow, I dug it, so that is what I wore for the day.

I paired my Trashy Diva Chambray Circle skirt with a red and blue heart printed top (gifted a couple years ago from a friend), a red cropped cardigan I got from Forever 21 several years ago (oh why did I not buy the white and black versions of this cardigan while I was at it!), and classic red Vans. For finishing touches I also added a red belt which I took from one of my Hell Bunny dresses, a new Friday the 13th inspired Jason Kitty brooch which I got from the wonderful Etsy shop DanielleVGreen about a week ago (thank you Junebugs and Georgia Peaches for pointing me in her direction and thank you Danielle for being such a wonderful and accommodating seller). I also wore this with red button stud earrings which I got from a local retro reproduction shop, Vintage Alley, a couple years ago, and a charm bracelet with a Mickey tee charm (I think from Disneyland several years ago) and a cupcake charm another friend made for me several years go.

Outfit of the Day (Sunday):

Sunday was another low key day. In the morning I helped my husband out with some projects he wanted to get done in the backyard and for a reward he took me out to lunch at Chili's. After lunch we wandered around the mall for a bit, checking out the toy store and where they are in the works of putting together the seasonal Halloween haunted house, Fear Overload. We've never been to this one in the mall before but we are definitely looking forward to making it happen this year.

There was no particular reason why I chose this outfit to wear this day other than I knew Autumn will be coming soon and we are on the last few relatively warm enough days to wear this Bernie Dexter Paris dress in Turquoise and Red Frenchie (i.e. Eiffel Tower print). I got this dress just recently as an extra birthday gift from my husband which he got from Zulily. I paired it with a light blue/turquoisey cardigan I got from Target several years ago and red Vans. For a finishing touch I wore my Erstwilder Farrah the French Kitty Brooch and a pair of red floral studs which I got from Forever 21 several years ago.

Outfit of the Day: Final Weekends in August

I'm always just a little delayed posting my Outfit of the Days

It maybe the first weekend of September now but here are three Outfits of the Day from the last two weekends in August. Saying goodbye to August would be a lot more bittersweet if we weren't moving into my all time favorite season, Autumn!

Anyhow, here we go!

Outfit of the Day (last last Saturday):

The weekend before last weekend my friends and I spent a day at the beach. It was a cooler day at the beach but it was nice to be out in the sun and spending time chatting it up with my friends.

For this day's occasion I wore my Trashy Diva Chambray Circle skirt, a yellow Gap gingham top I found on ebay a few months ago, red Ecco flats also from ebay from several months ago, and a red cardigan I got from Nordstrom Rack several years ago. For a finishing touch I wore red floral studs from Forever 21 several years ago, an oversized sun hat (my biggest hat ever) which I got from Trashy Diva earlier this summer, and a watermelon shaped straw purse which I got from ebay a couple weeks ago.

Outfit of the Day (last last Sunday):

The next day, on Sunday I spent the day out and about with my husband. We were planning on going to the local zucchini festival in town but when we got there decided against it and instead decided to check out the Marina in nearby San Leandro. The marina is a nice nature area with a huge park adjacent to it. There were lots of people out walking the trails, playing in the parks, and catching some pokemon. It was a fun day. I didn't get any pics while we were out there but I'm sure we will be going back again!

For this day's activities I wore a Bettie Page/Tatyana circle skirt jumper in green paired with a Trashy Diva Louise blouse in Crepe Myrtle. I wore this with a pair of basic black flats. For a finishing touch I wore a boater hat I got from Nordstrom last year.

Outfit of the Day (last Sunday):

Last Sunday my husband and I decided to go out for a bit to one of our favorite nearby towns, Alameda, to play indoor golf and then play at the 80's arcade. It was fun to check out this new to us indoor golf place and it was also fun changing venues a bit and going to the 80's arcade in Alameda after spending lots of time playing at the newly opened 80's arcade in our town.

As I had mentioned in one of my earlier posts, Outfit of the Day: 1987, I have really been in the mood for 80's style. Lately it's been more like 80's everything... 80's music, 80's movies, 80's arcades, and 80's style! This outfit was my fun take on a 2010's version of 80's does 50's. ;)

I got this fun pastel striped skirt, the Aspiration Creation Skirt, from Modcloth a few weeks ago. It is one of their own branded items. I paired this skirt with the Enchanting Epilogue Sleep top (also from Modcloth from a few weeks ago). When I bought the top I was just kind of adding it into my basket because it was on sale and by adding it to my basket I actually saved more than I would spend on it with a coupon code I had. But when it arrived with the skirt I realized that they matched each other pretty well so figured why not wear it as a day top? I also wore a Gap jean jacket I got at Buffalo Exchange several years ago and a pair of B.A.I.T. Dolly Sandals in Fair Pink which I got a few weeks ago from Zulily. For a finishing touch I also wore my new Erstwilder God of Time brooch, a pair of turquoise heart studs from Forever 21 from several years ago, a Coach shoulder strap purse I got from my mother-in-law for Christmas several years ago, red heart shaped sunglasses my husband bought for me from Vans a couple months ago, and a pink scrunchie I picked up from a local shop recently.

Matching Your Dress To Your Teaware Part 28: Into the Sea

“I am longing to be with you, and by the sea, where we can talk together freely and build our castles in the air.”
Bram Stoker, Dracula

Now that we are at the end of the last full month of the summer, I wanted to end things with a sea themed Perfect Pairing.

Last year Trashy Diva released their Deep Sea Coral print, a gorgeous novelty print. It is everything I love most about novelty prints- it's a little quirky, yet decidedly more mature than other vintage repro novelty prints out there. I love that it's on a dark background and I also love that it isn't too busy, both which help in giving it a somber feeling. This somberness transfers into elegance as one takes in the corals, shells, and minimal sea floor. From the way the print is illustrated, the corals seem to sway gently in this darkest quiet corner of the sea floor. The bubbles in the print give the print just the tiniest touch of whimsy and keeps this quirky somber elegant print fantastical rather than menacing.

Like the Deep Sea Coral print by Trashy Diva, the Ebb Tide Pink and Turquoise Teapot by Hull found on Replacements.com perfectly illustrates the elegance and beauty of the sea. Moving up from the sea floor, finding ourselves at the shore, an ebb tide occurs between high tide and low tide when water is flowing away from the shore. I image a gentle day as the waves moves up touching the shore, then moves back out tickling the sand, the waves unfailingly crashing and receding, gently swaying and moving. The soft and varied color on this teapot bring to mind an early morning or early evening, like the ebb tide, a moment in between. A little bit quirky and whimsical, yet elegant and so graceful, this teapot is the most genital and refreshing dawn or dusk at the sea embodied.

Summertime Tea at Muir's Tea Room

Pull up a chair and come to tea...

Muir's Tea Room, Sebastopol, CA

Last Saturday some friends and I went out to afternoon tea at Muir's Tea Room in Sebastopol, CA. It was quite a drive up there but the company was well spent. The draw of going to this tea room is that everything on their menu is entirely vegan. I'm not a vegan myself and do enjoy cream with my scones and milk in my tea but for my friend who is vegan, this was a big draw.

My friend made reservations in advance and we met up early for the drive up. Unfortunately, we ran into a lot more traffic than we were expecting but when we called the tea room to let them know we were going to be late they were very accommodating about it.

The tea room is housed in a charming cottage framed by a stunning garden out front. Since I didn't make the reservations I don't know this for sure, but it appears they offer seating in the main house, on the front and back porch, and in the front garden. Our table was waiting for us in the main house at a window overlooking the front garden.

Despite only offering vegan fare they have a pretty extensive menu that includes everything from full tea service, smaller tea offerings, a la cart finger sandwiches, full lunches, soups, salads, as well as sweet and savory pastries and desserts. For tea this day I split the Hope the World Tea (a tea for two) with a friend. It included two pots of tea, two cups of soup, two small salads, three finger sandwiches each of our choice, a "sausage" roll to share, two scones with "clotted cream" and jam, and an assortment of petite desserts.

Tea started with two pots of tea. I chose chamomile since I knew that would be a tea I'd be okay not having milk for though I am curious what they would have offered for milk if I asked. Next the soup was brought out, a tomato bisque, soon followed by a pear and walnut salad. When the soups and salads were done the tea server came with a three tiered plate of our sandwiches, a sausage roll, scones, and petite desserts. For sandwiches we chose the pear and walnut sandwich, which like its name was a sweet and nutty open faced sandwich on a rye bread, a pesto tomato sandwich which came on white bread, and a sandwich called field roast which had a meatless patty with avocado and garlic aioli. The pesto tomato sandwich was the best followed by the meatless patty sandwich even though you can tell is was a meatless patty. The pear and walnut sandwich was alright but wasn't my favorite. It was a little bland to my taste. When we got to it, I was a bit disappointed by the "sausage" roll. Not because it was a meatless "sausage" roll and tasted much like the meatless patty but because there was only one that came in our tea for two. We cut it and shared it but it was strange to see they only gave us one. The scones, slightly lemony poppy seed flavored scones, were good and I couldn't tell they were vegan at all but they really failed I thought in their "clotted cream". The clotted cream did not resemble clotted cream at all, and when I asked my friends at the table if the clotted cream was okay because mine was slightly citricy in flavor and I thought it might have gone bad, my friends said, I thought it was butter. And so the "clotted cream" was somewhere between this weird citricy flavored gooey spread and a salted butter type spread. Also, for our scones we only got the smallest dollop of this "clotted cream" each and an even smaller dollop of jam to share for the two scones between us. Needless to say, I was not able to finish my scone at all. For dessert there were six pieces of petite desserts, all different, all really hard to split when having a tea for two. I would have preferred that they serve us two servings of three desserts which would have been easier to split or just ensured that the desserts were something that could be cut easily. Instead the desserts like the powdered shortbread cookie were too hard to cut, or the many chocolate desserts they served were really sticky, gooey, and messy when trying to split. Also, while the chocolate desserts and chocolate covered petit four were delicious and I couldn't tell they were vegan at all, the shortbread cookie and mini cupcake definitely had a distinct flavor to it. I think the server said the mini cupcake was gluten free which could be the reason for the flavor I was tasting, but the cookie also had the same kind of undertone in its taste. Perhaps that one was also gluten free. Or maybe it was just because it was vegan.

Overall, it was an interesting tea. Not terrible, but definitely different. If it weren't for my vegan friend I really wouldn't have had any reason to want to try a vegan tea... in fact when she suggested going to a place for vegan tea I had assumed she would have vegan tea and I would be free to have regular tea, so I admit, it was a bit of a surprise up to the day before when I looked this place up, to see what was in store for tea. Muir's tea room did a great job on the presentation; the sweet cottage and gorgeous garden were a treat to see, the fable wildlife theme prevalent throughout the interior of the tea room was also cute, the server was attentive and we were even greeted by who I assumed was the owner or manager at the end of our tea to see how we liked our tea. But for me, being a person with no dietary restrictions, I really did miss my non vegan food offerings for tea and was very much aware of how the food was different. This is probably a paradise for vegans wanting tea and I'm glad my vegan friend got to have a proper vegan tea but vegan tea is not really the thing for me.

Outfit of the Day:

For tea this day I decided to wear my Trashy Diva Honey Sun dress in Steel Magnolias. I wanted to be sure to get to wear this dress out this summer since it has a super cute criss-cross back that is perfect for summer. I paired it with a pink MAK cardigan which I got from either Modcloth or Trashy Diva a few years ago, a grey camisole underneath for extra modesty which I got from Ebay a few months ago, and a pair of white kitten heels by Gabriella Rocha from Zappos from several years ago. For a finishing touch I also wore a pearl and beaded bracelet I got for my birthday from my step mom, white and silver floral stud earrings I got from Forever 21 a few years ago, and a beautiful magnolia hair flower I got from the Etsy shop, Rose La Mer, during an Etsy shopping event in San Francisco last Christmas season.
