Outfit of the Day: 1987

The 80's has really had my heart lately

I don't know exactly what first brought on this feeling of nostalgia and wanting to go back to the decade of my childhood... I do know however that when I first saw Modcloth carrying rainbow striped dresses such as their long gone Some Flair Over the Rainbow dress (maybe a bit more on the 70's side) followed sometime somewhat soon after by the Too Much Fun Dress in Rainbow by Emily and Fin (also long gone), I sat up and took notice. I almost bought both dresses. But somehow, neither was quiet right with my heart's desire. In hindsight, I do wish I would have gotten both but you know what they say about hindsight...

Anyhow, now with a season's full of Stranger Things fresh on my brain, a new 80's arcade, High Scores, that just opened up in our home town, and a new Erstwilder collection out, Erstwilder Goes Galactic, a collection for which many of the pieces scream 80's nostalgia to me, I have truly been bit by the bug. I've really really been wanting some 80's style clothes!

So for now I dress in what I've got while being thankful there's a vintage consignment store in our town to browse through not to mention a super awesome nearby arcade to play in. ;)

Outfit of the Day (Friday):

For the opening day at the new High Scores in Hayward, I knew I wanted to wear something kind of 80's to show my support for this awesome place. I got this dress a few years ago from Forever 21. While it's technically completely modern it really has a late 80's feels to it to me. Maybe because of the loose fitting off the shoulders top, or maybe the drop waist cut... It has cats printed all over and I knew my brand spanking new Erstwilder Rebel, Rebel brooch would be the perfect accessory to pair with this outfit. I also paired it with black capri leggings, a black tank, and black flats. For an extra finishing touch I wore a pair of fushia hoop earrings I had from an Invader Zim earring set I got from Hot Topic several years ago.

Outfit of the Day: A Walk in the Woods and A Day With Keanu

Last weekend was a well spent one

On Saturday Tim and I took a walk around one of our nearby lakes, Don Castro Lake. This is one of my favorite lakes to walk around because the footpath becomes very narrow in places and is little more than a patch of worn bare dirt surrounded by trees and lush undergrowth for the better part of the path. Walking along this quiet lake, tramping through this densely grown footpath, it is easy to forget we are so close to civilization, and not hard to image we are deep in a forest somewhere.

On Sunday, we changed it up a bit by going to the nearby historic waterfront town of Alameda where we met up with a friend and saw the new Key and Peele cat comedy movie, Keanu, at the newly renovated historic Alameda theater. We all enjoyed the movie a lot. And then, for an extra treat, enjoyed playing at the 80's arcade, High Score, across the street.

It was a great weekend and was definitely good to get out in a relaxed kind of way.

Outfit of the Day (Saturday):
For the walk around the lake I picked my Trashy Diva Dorothy dress in Irish Polka. I love how easy to wear and how comfortable this dress is. Because we were going to do a lot of walking, I paired this with black Sketcher Go Walks, my go to shoes for heavy walking while in a dress.

Outfit of the Day (Sunday):
Because we were off to see a cat comedy I knew I had to dress in cat theme. I figured my Trashy Diva Cage dress in Smoke Leopard would be the perfect dress. After all, it was a gangster themed cat comedy. ;) I paired this with a black knit bolero by Elle which I got from Kohl's a couple years ago, and a pair of basic black flats. For a finishing touch, and to add some fun little cat details, I also wore this with a pair of oversized cat cameo stud earrings I got a couple years ago from a local retro shop, Vintage Alley, and a cute kitty brooch by Lumpy Buttons which I got c/o Cats Like Us last year. I also added a black sequin headband to my outfit to jazz things up even more.

Outfit of the Day: Cat Dress For Cat Town

I love dressing in theme

So whenever I go to any of the cat cafes I know wearing a cat themed outfit needs to happen (see my previous post here). I know I've found my place and my people whenever I show up to the cat cafes and all the people working there are also sporting their cat themed stuff. At the Dancing Cat, the owners Ann and Mary would always have on their dancing cat earrings. At Cat Town Cafe the co-founder, the Cat Man of West Oakland, is always there in one of his many cat shirts. This time around one of the guys working in the cafe was also in his cat attire as well wearing not only a cat sweater but a Christmas cat sweater! Cat people are the best.

Outfit of the day:
For a trip to Cat Town I wore the Hither and Yarn dress by Sunny Girl from Modcloth. I paired this dress with a basic black cardigan from the Gap and basic black flats. To Christmas it up I paired it with some sparkly black and gold net tights I got from Target which I layered with sheer black tights underneath for extra warmth. To continue with Christmasing it up I popped on my red overcoat, also from Target. For the finishing touch and for extra catification I wore my Rosita Bonita cat pendent necklace which I got from Trashy Diva.

Outfit of the Day: Autumn Flavored Cat Print For a Cat Filled Day!

So the weekend before last was one filled with lots of mixed emotions.

On Sunday Tim and I started the day by going to the Internet Cat Video Festival in San Jose. It was a completely packed theater but we were glad to be sitting inside an actual theater and not watching it outside as I've heard some other cat video festivals do it. The festival was a lot of fun. One hour full of internet cat videos. Some really silly, some really funny, and some a little more serious. I mainly was interested in the slice of life videos that caught cats doing crazy and funny things, but some of the videos were more put together like actual movies with actual stories. There were even some animated short movies shown. Overall, it was a lot of fun and I would definitely go back again next year if I can!

After the cat video festival Tim and I went out to lunch. I picked a nearby New Orleans style restaurant, Poor House Bistro. The food was pretty good. I ordered beignets and a muffaletta (a salami and ham sandwich with lots of olives), and Tim ordered the sampler platter which came with gumbo, red beans and rice, jambalaya, and corn bread. We were surprised to see the place was so hopping! They had a zydeco band set up and playing just outside in the seating area out there. Overall they did a great job with the ambiance of the place. It felt just like being in New Orleans!

The next stop was the Dancing Cat cat cafe, our real reason for leaving the house that day! You can see my post on our last day at the Dancing Cat here.

Outfit of the Day:
For this day's activities I knew I had to wear another cat related outfit. I knew just the piece! I got this skirt by Retrolicious for my birthday with a gift certificate for Modcloth from my friend. It's one of the best cat prints ever... kitties and books, oh my! The hues on this are so autumn so I knew it would be the perfect one to wear this autumn weekend before the winter comes in full force. I paired this skirt with a black knit sweater top by Kling which I also got from Modcloth last year. To stay warm I also paired this with black tights and a red cardigan which I got a couple years back from Nordstrom Rack. I picked some red flats by Ecco to wear this with it. I finally found my perfect red flats! I found these on ebay after years of searching for just this pair!

Vacation Slideshow: Halloween in New Orleans, Part 1

It was vacation time again this year!

New Orleans has been a place that's been on my wishlist for vacation destinations since I was in middle school and obsessed with Anne Rice books. The draw was only increased after I found out that not only Anne Rice lived there but also Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails. The more things I heard about New Orleans the more I wanted to go. For instance, their voodoo past, their ghost stories, their food, their love for Halloween, it's proximity to the swamp, Trashy Diva (of course), and Louisiana's Halloween haunted house in Baton Rouge, the 13th Gate, which continuously makes the top 5, several times number 1, on several lists of top Halloween haunted houses in the country. After years and years of pining to go, Tim and I finally made our way out there for a week long vacation.

We arrived on Tuesday night just in time to check into our B&B in the Garden District and meet up with a friend for dinner and then drinks on Frenchmen St. It was a wonderful way to get a taste of things to come.

On Wednesday, our first official full day there, Tim and I took the St. Charles Streetcar down to the French Quarter, made a mandatory stop at Cafe Du Monde for beignets and cafe au lait, and wandered around the French Quarter. We went to the French Market on Decatur St., had poboys at Killer Poboys in the Erin Rose bar, walked up and down Chartres St and Royal St where we stopped in at Trashy Diva on Royal to meet up with friends, then off to Magazine St in the lower Garden District area for a large meetup with lots of friends at the Trashy Diva shop there. Afterwards we zoomed back to the French Quarter for a nightly vampire tour where we ended our night after having a traditional cajun dinner at the well deserved local favorite, Coop's Place. What an incredible first day it was!

Day 2 (Thursday):

On Thursday, our second day, we rented a car and drove up to Slidell where we met up with some more friends for a boat tour through the Honey Island swamp. The weather was perfect and the swamp gorgeous. We saw wild boar, an alligator, and turtles. Afterwards we all went to a nearby restaurant, the Southside Cafe.... it was my first and only restaurant where I remembered to order sweet tea. The muffalettas and fried seafood baskets were huge and delicious! We had just enough time that day to get back home, relax for a bit, then head out to meet up with some more friends for dinner at Le Crepe Nanou. We then ended our night by going out to the nearby Halloween haunted house, House of Shock. Highlights at this haunted house was the full service bar (which is pretty common at all NOLA locations though this is something we never see at our local haunted houses), the 3-D section, the room of mirrors, and the floor show while waiting in line.

Outfit of the Day
Wednesday:

(pictured above) For Wednesday I wore my Trashy Diva Streetcar dress in black and white plaid. I could not resist the opportunity to get to wear the Streetcar dress on the streetcar!

Thursday:
On Thursday, for our day in the swamps, I opted to wear my Sourpuss Hey Kitten dress. After all, this dress features an all over print of smiling vintage Halloween cat faces and Halloween was, at this point, just around the corner! I paired this with my Rosita Bonita Pyewacket cat earrings, the image for which matched to a T! I also paired this with my comfortable walking shoes, Sketcher Go Walks.

For Thursday evening when we went out to dinner with friends I changed into my Trashy Diva 1940's dress in mini fleur. I couldn't resist packing as much New Orleans themed clothes as possible into this trip! I paired this dress with fleur de lis dangle earrings. I also paired this with my comfortable Sketcher Go Walks since I knew we'd be going out to the Halloween haunted house later that night and I was pretty sure there was going to be a lot of dirt roads out that way.
