Outfit of the Day: Grandparents in Town

Last week my grandparents were visiting from Florida

We celebrated their arrival with a Korean BBQ dinner at my mom's house during the week and then that weekend took them for a day trip to Yosemite! It was great having them here for a visit and it was a great time getting to spend it with them outdoors in the perfect weather we were having that weekend.

Outfit of the Day (Wednesday):

The day my grandparents flew in from Florida my mom hosted a Korean BBQ dinner. For the first day seeing my grandparent I decided my silk Trashy Diva Betty dress in Cherries print would be the perfect dress for the occasion! I paired this with gingham wedges I had just received from Modcloth that day! (Available here on sale now!) I also paired this with a red cardigan to brighten up the outfit some more.

Outfit of the Day (Saturday):

On Saturday for our day trip to Yosemite I didn't really expect to get too much hiking in since we were all going to be there with my 80+ year old grandfather so I figured why not wear something super fun and springy? I decided my Trashy Diva circle skirt in Jade Watercolor would be perfect for the trip! I paired this with a green Tatyana sweater I just got on sale in Las Vegas during our last trip there. I also paired this with Sketcher Go Walk shoes for the bits that we would be walking and, to stay warm, a pair of brown sweater tights I got from Target earlier this wear.  It was the perfect cool spring day outfit for Yosemite.

Matching Your Dress To Your Teaware Part 25: My Wild Irish Rose

Happy St. Patrick's Day Kittens!

I feel like it's been a while since I last featured a perfect pairing but with the St. Patrick's holiday here I could not let this opportunity pass me by.

I found this gorgeous vintage Lefton Shamrock teapot on Etsy from the Etsy shop, Delights by Judy. This teapot is the perfect tea companion for St. Patrick's day. It is a classic beauty which features golden gilding along its trim and a beautiful double-hued green shamrock pattern throughout its body. A surprisingly fun secret that you won't know just looking at it though is that it is also a musical teapot which plays the tune of "My Sweet Irish Rose." Such a sweet and darling teapot it is!

This teapot would go so gorgeously with Trashy Diva's Jade Watercolor print! The Jade Watercolor print features an all over multi-shaded green print of shamrocks, leaves, and roses. The Lena top and circle skirt is a classic beauty, much like the classic beauty of the Lefton teapot. And like the Lefton teapot, this set holds a fun secret... while it looks like a dress when worn together, it is indeed two pieces!

How perfect it would be to be enjoying some quiet time to the tune of "My Sweet Irish Rose," sipping warm tea from this shamrock teapot, while wearing this shamrock themed dress!

Vacation Slideshow: Halloween in New Orleans, Part 2

Continuing on with the Vacation Slideshow....

Day 3 (Friday):

On Friday, our third day in Louisiana, we started the day with breakfast at Cake. Now, I've heard such wonderful things about this place but to me I really didn't see the draw. It appeared to be a local favorite, but for me, nothing so much to write home about. After breakfast we headed out of the city and into plantation country. Our first stop was at Laura Plantation. A traditional creole plantation, Laura Plantation was built off the ground and is decked out in an array of colors. As a creole plantation, it was mainly built for work as the families mostly had their money in their French Quarter homes. While it's pretty modest in looks compared to traditional American plantations the grounds were amazing, lots of gardens and sugar cane plants, and the tour was one of the best ones we had on our entire trip! I heard a lot about how plantation tours will often leave out the history of slavery associated with it but I found the plantation tour at Laura Plantation to be very informative and, to an extent, no holds barred. If you're ever up in this area, I'd definitely recommend a stop at Laura Plantation!

The second plantation we visited was Oak Alley Plantation, an immaculate plantation built in the traditional American plantation style: low to the ground, painted white, and exhuming all the wealth of the family that lived there. Oak Alley is perhaps best known for its avenue of oaks that run down the main walkway leading up to the house. It's interesting to note that the oaks actually predate the plantation-- though I forget what they were originally planted for. If this house looks familiar perhaps it's because you recognize it as being the home Louis de Pointe du Lac lived in in the film Interview with the Vampire. Anne Rice fans can also note that this plantation was the inspiration for the Talamasca Motherhouse in Louisiana in the Vampire and Mayfair witches series.

While the main tour of the house we went on did not talk much at all about the history of slavery at the plantation, the people at Oak Alley were sure to let us know there was another tour completely dedicated to this that was included in the price of admission, though we did not have enough time to also go on that tour.

The third plantation we visited was the haunted Myrtles Plantation farther north in St. Francisville, which is where we stayed for the night. We arrived just 10 minutes too late and missed the last history tour of the day but did make it in time for their mystery tour which they run Friday and Saturday nights.

The mystery tour gives a tour of the downstairs area of the house while telling several ghost stories which include the history they think pertains to these hauntings. While I'm a huge horror fan and love ghost stories I admit I was really nervous to stay the night here. We weren't able to get a room inside the main house but instead stayed in one of the outside rooms. Did anything happen during our stay you may want to know? I honestly believe so. At least twice during the night I woke up because I could feel the bed shaking, thinking it was an earthquake. When I remembered we weren't in California I chalked it up to Tim perhaps turning over in his sleep. However, the next morning when I was fully awake, awakened at 7 in the morning by the bed shaking again, I got a good look at the bed and noted that it was a really sturdy and dense bed without much spring to it. I could sit down on one side of the bed without the other side moving at all. Perhaps it was all in my head since I was already spooked to sleep there but I swear I woke up at least twice in the night because it felt like there was an earthquake. Another thing to note, when we first got into our room I turned the thermostat way up... up to about 76-77 degrees because the room was a little cold. At night, waking up in the night, I was really cold and could hear the air conditioner running even though it felt like it must be in the high 50's already. I was too afraid to get up to check it out but what I don't understand is why the air conditioner would have been running when it wasn't supposed to kick in until it was a warm 76-77 degrees. Seems a little strange to me.

After our mystery tour at the Myrtle's Plantation and after having a wonderful dinner there at their Carriage House Restaurant, Tim and I drove down to Baton Rouge to go to the Halloween Haunted house, the 13th Gate. The 13th Gate consecutively makes it on the list of the top 5 Halloween haunted houses year after year, often times making it to number one! This year hauntworld.com listed it as #3 in the country. It was the most amazing things I've ever seen! For a horror fan, it is the stuff dreams are made of! To say it was incredible would be an understatement. The people who put this on and who created and run this are truly artists and masters at what they do! Just imagine, the scariest movie you've ever seen in your whole life and imagine living it. That is what this was all about. So great!!!

Day 4 (Saturday. HALLOWEEN!):

On Saturday morning, we woke early, checked out, and made our way back to New Orleans to start our Halloween celebrations, but not before taking this picture out in front of Myrtles Plantation!

Back in New Orleans, after dropping off our rental car, our first stop was at the Windsor Court Hotel for tea time at Le Salon.

The tea was impeccable, the finger sandwiches scrumptious, the scones flavorful and warm, and the desserts delightful. Two things that really made this place stand out for me was that tea came with your choice of a mixed cocktail, and also the tea itself was fully served by the server rather than poured by yourself at the table. I know this was something Tim did not care for much but I really appreciated this extra touch of indulgence. Our cups never made it down to the last drop and our cups were continuously kept warm by this constant top off. Another thing that was extra special was the harpist they had playing throughout the entire tea. She wore Trashy Diva too nonetheless!

After tea we went back to our bed and breakfast in the Garden District to get ready for our night out for Halloween but not before walking through the French Quarter where I was able to finally get a pic of the outside of Trashy Diva on Royal St.

Happy Halloween! Time to go trick or treating!

Outfit of the Day
Friday:
(pictured above) For Friday it seemed fitting to wear my Trashy Diva circle skirt and lena top in Jade Watercolor. I paired this with my black ankle strap flats, the only somewhat dressy shoes I packed.

Saturday:
(pictured above) On Saturday, in the spirit of Halloween, I wore a Snow White inspired outfit which you might have seen in one of my previous Perfect Pairing posts here. For this look I paired my Trashy Diva yellow Maria dress with a blue Sweet sweater by Heart of Haute, a red bow headband in my hair, and my black ankle strap flats.

Dress Review: Trashy Diva Jade Watercolor Separates

I was a little late to the game when I got my Jade Watercolor separates from Trashy Diva

The Jade Watercolor print from Trashy Diva came out at the same time as the Geisha Fans, just in time for spring! Before they released all the dresses, when all of the internet only had just a teaser of what the print was from people's cell phone pics of some of the dresses in the shop windows, I was really hoping they would have one of their Hopscotch or Dixie styles in this print. I imagined and dreamed about how lovely it would be for a Hopscotch or Dixie in this print.... Ah, to have an emerald green contrasting top to go along with the gorgeous emerald green, light green, and in places turquoise colored, airbrushed, watercolor looking foliage against the white background of the print. Once the dresses were live though and I saw there was no Hopscotch or Dixie in this print's offerings I was disappointed. I put too much time hoping for that fabled Hopscotch or Dixie. If they didn't have a Hopscotch or Dixie in this print, I didn't want it!

And so I didn't buy anything in this collection. Other prints came out. I got them or I didn't. All the while I heard people raving about this Jade Watercolor print. Meh.

But eventually I gave in. Over time the print grew on me and it became something I had to have. There wasn't any Hopscotches or Dixies but they did have a Honey with the contrasting top and they also were offering skirts and lena tops which also had the contrasting green at the bust. Because I couldn't go to the store to try them both on before I bought them I bought them both knowing that one of the two will get sent back. I crossed my fingers and really hoped that I would like the separates more. I have the perfect mint green sweater top to go with that skirt! But deep down I had a feeling I would probably end up loving the honey more because it's a dress and I do me some dresses.

When they came in the mail I was pleasantly surprised that I indeed did like the separates more. They were both nice really but the honey dress I felt  gave me a weird shape at the waist because of the side zipper. Also, compared to the skirt and lena top separates it just didn't have the same easy to wear feeling. It felt a bit more constricting and just not as comfortable. Back it went to the store while the skirt and lena top stayed home with me!

The skirt is a basic circle skirt. I usually order up a size in their skirts or shorts but even the size up they were sold out of so I got two sizes up from my normal size which ended up not being that big of a deal at all. The Lena top is a cropped top. If you don't want your mid-drift showing you will definitely need to pair this with a high waisted skirt (like the coordinating circle skirt) or with some high waisted shorts or pants. Lucky for me not only do I have a mint sweater top that goes perfectly with the skirt but I also have some high waisted capris that pair pretty nicely with the lena top as well!

The lena top exceeds expectations! The construction of this top is very well made. It has a shelf type bust which then has a gathered bust in the contrasting green that I love so much with this print and the whole thing is self lined. Also, the shoulder straps on it are completely adjustable to ensure a great fit. I was able to get the top in my usual size.

This print came in a thick heavy weight cotton that has lots of stretch.
